Der langsam in der wachsenden Agglomeration der nordindischen Großstadt Jaipur verschwindende Vorort Sanganer ist bekannt für seine kunstvollen Textildrucke. Hier entsteht ein Archiv als Repräsentanz der kunsthistorischen Identität des Ortes. Das Raumprogramm teilt sich dabei in zwei Teile: Ein Museumstrakt steht für die Bewahrung und Wertschätzung des Textildrucks als Kunst- und Kulturobjekt, während die Werkstätten den Aspekt der Kunstfertigkeit und des Handwerks beheimaten. Bei der Ausformulierung der Baukörper wurde sowohl das Thema lokaler Ideale von Symmetrie und Raumfolgen aufgenommen als auch die Tradition introvertierter architektonischer Formen im Umgang mit der harten und gnadenlosen Sonneneinstrahlung jener Region.
Slowly surrounded by the evergrowing suburbs of the North-Indian metropolis of Jaipur, Sanganer remains a stronghold for the art of textile block printing. The archive building strengthens that position by creating a hub for the historical identity of the place. A museum represents the aspects of textile printing as a cultural entity, an object of art, while workshops for the craftsman and atrisans showcase current production and the proficiency. The formal attributions of the volumes refers to local ideals of order and symmetry as well as reflecting different methods of dealing with the harsh local climate. The sheer mass of the building is a contrast to the dry, rugged and hostile surrounding desert. It provides a sequence of intimate and shaded spaces, a refuge from the outside.
